Today we would like to give special recognition to our Youth Corps Members. These individuals range from 16-17 years of age, volunteer for three hours a week (Can be counted towards Community Service for High School), and respond to 911 emergencies, on our ambulances, side by side with their advisor. We currently have approximately 10 Youth Corps. members in our program. If you currently know any teenagers in the 16-17 year old age range that want to have an educational experience they can go to our website and fill out an application! We did have a waiting list, however, due to a number of youth corps recently moving up to Senior Corps, we are now accepting applications again for vacant spots!
Youth Corps., as stated above, respond to 911 emergencies on our vehicles with a designated advisor. During the calls they assist the crew members is moving and lifting the patient with various devices, they observe/learn/assist EMTs with treatment. Such a case may be holding stabilization of an injured extremity. These individuals must also be BLS CPR Certified and complete Bloodborne Pathogens training. They also assist our EMTs with rig checks, enabling them to learn where equipment is kept on the ambulance and how to use it.
Our Youth Corps. also attend many of our events, like the fourth of July stand bys, or parades. Additionally we do have some riding members who started out in our Youth Corps. many years back and went on to become EMTs, Drivers, CPR Instructors, and even a board member or Officer of the VAC.
Thank you to all of our Youth Corps. Members for the hard work you place into Peekskill VAC!
